Sgraffito Designs

The technique I have used for decoration on my pottery is called sgraffito. The pots are made in a white-bodied clay which I spray with a layer of liquid coloured slip. When this has dried a freehand design is “scratched” through with a fine tool to reveal the contrasting body. Then with the application of a single glaze,  two colours are created. On the hand-built pieces there are areas where I leave the slip unglazed as the texture of this against the glazed sections enhances the sensory feel of the pot.
